A Surge Protection Device (SPD) is an electrical safety device designed to protect electrical systems, equipment, and appliances from voltage spikes or transient overvoltages—commonly caused by lightning strikes, power grid switching, motor start-up, or faulty wiring. SPDs work by diverting excess voltage safely to the earth so that connected equipment receives only the optimal and safe level of voltage.
A Surge Protection Device is installed in electrical systems to prevent sudden high-voltage surges from damaging sensitive and expensive equipment such as breakers, drives, PLCs, computers, refrigerators, communication systems, etc.
It acts as a voltage gatekeeper:
Under normal voltage → remains inactive
When a surge occurs → instantly redirects the extra voltage to earth ground
This prevents overheating, insulation breakdown, and electrical fires.
*Electrical surges in Bangladesh are common due to:
i. Lightning (especially during rainy season)
ii. Unstable grid conditions
iii. Load shedding and sudden reconnection
iv. Large motors switching
v. Transformer switching operations
These sudden surges can permanently damage electrical components. An SPD ensures safety, reliability, and longevity of equipment.
